TWiMfest Day One - Take the Plunge

OK, earlier this year, the Do Good Badlies produced one of the best recovery sets I have ever seen, through a series of great songs, clever material selection and having fun, of which Daniel Greer was a major factor. So to say I was looking forward to his solo set would be putting it mildly. The set was delivered with a bluesy feel for the most part, with Daniel’s signature raspy vocals providing an edgy
and emotional atmosphere. Some of the songs were new, but ‘Riding Out the Storm in Quebec’ was recognisable from the Do Good Badlies and the story of how the song got written was funny. A tentatively titled tune called ‘If I didn’t drink so much’ was a bittersweet reference to the power of drink bringing people together and then being the reason for them falling apart later on. The subject of alcohol was a constant chord through the set but allowed Daniel to celebrate and vent at the same time and he was truly enjoyable to watch and listen to as the set progressed. A Dylan cover near the end ‘Don’t think twice, it’s all right’ was superb and the final song was powerful with chopped chords throughout. All in all a very special set from another talented artist who left the venue to set up with the Do Good Badlies for another set at another location, now that’s rock and roll.

Syn Brit Rating: 4/5
